#Book #Review: 5 out of 5 stars for The Troop by Nick Cutter @TheNickCutter @Pocket_Books

TITLE: The Troop
AUTHOR: Nick Cutter
PUBLISHER: Pocket Books
PUBLICATION DATE: July 22, 2014
FORMAT: Mass Market Paperback
LENGTH: 520 pages
GENRE: Horror
ISBN: 9781476717722
Once a year, scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a three-day camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story and a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—stumbles upon their campsite, Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. An inexplicable horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival that will pit the troop against the elements, the infected...and one another.

MY REVIEW:

I think I just found a new horror author to love!

The story starts off with a news article about an emaciated man nicknamed “Starvin’ Marvin,” who stole a waitress’ truck. What made the man so memorable was his voracious appetite. The waitress said that he ate the diner out of eggs! Marvin drives to the coast and steals a boat to cross the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. He just wants to get away, and he’s heading towards Falstaff Island which is uninhabited by humans. Marvin doesn’t realize that Scoutmaster Tim is already on the island with his troop of 14-year-old boy scouts for their annual weekend trip. The troop has been together since the boys were five years old, so they are a tight-knit group...or so they seem. Marvin’s presence will test their loyalty to each other.

Wow, I just loved this book! Cutter made me squirm (there are a lot of ewwww moments), and I really liked the diabolical aspect of the story where the characters turned on each other. I really enjoyed how the author added dimension to the tale through the addition of newspaper articles and interviews to shed light on what is going on.

I already own Cutter’s The Deep, and I can’t wait to read it!

MY RATING:
5 stars!! I loved it and will likely re-read it! You should definitely read it if you enjoy horror.

Can't-Wait Wednesday: Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris @BAParisAuthor @StMartinsPress

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Tessa @ Wishful Endings to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released as well. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. Find out more here.

Here is this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection:

TITLE: Bring Me Back
AUTHOR: B.A. Paris
PUBLISHER: St. Martin's Press
EXPECTED PUBLICATION DATE: June 19, 2018
FORMAT: Hardcover
LENGTH: 336 pages
GENRE: Mystery, Thriller
ISBN: 9781250151339
The new twisty, gripping novel from the author of the instant New York Times and USA Today bestselling novels Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown.

A young British couple are driving through France on holiday when they stop for gas. He runs in to pay, she stays in the car. When he returns her car door has been left open, but she's not inside. No one ever sees her again.

Ten years later he's engaged to be married; he's happy, and his past is only a tiny part his life now. Until he comes home from work and finds his new wife-to-be is sitting on their sofa. She's turning something over in her fingers, holding it up to the light. Something that would have no worth to anyone else, something only he and she would know about, because his wife is the sister of his missing first love.

As more and more questions are raised, their marriage becomes strained. Has his first love somehow come back to him after all this time? Or is the person who took her playing games with his mind?

Don't miss Bring Me Back, the next thriller from "A-list" (Booklist) author B. A. Paris.

I still haven't tried this author, but I own both of her previous books because they sound like they would be right up my alley!
